Fifteen years ago, Skylar made a small
necklace for a classmate's girlfriend. She also did something most jewelers wouldn't think to do — she photographed every step of making it, and tucked the photos into the gift box. The girlfriend opened the box. She didn't gasp at the necklace first. She cried at the photographs.

The Story of How BrilliantCarats Began — and Why Every Piece We Make Arrives with Its Own

In her last year of jewelry design school, Skylar got asked the same question over and over: "What should I get her?"

One morning, a classmate came to her in quiet panic. His girlfriend's birthday was three days away. He had been looking for weeks. Nothing in any window felt like her — too generic, too obvious, or simply not hers.

Skylar listened, then asked one question back: "What does she care about?"

He thought for a moment. "She always reads her horoscope. She's a Pisces. She talks about the ocean."

That night, Skylar designed a small silver chain. Two fish intertwined. A tiny aquamarine where their tails met. Made by hand, in her studio, over the next two days.

But she did something else that wouldn't have occurred to most designers. She took photographs of every step — the sketch, the silver being cut, the stone being set, the chain being polished.

She arranged them on a small card, tied it with twine, and slipped it inside the gift box.

When the girlfriend opened it, she didn't react the way Skylar or her classmate expected.

She didn't gasp at the necklace first.

She cried at the photographs.

Because what she saw wasn't just a piece of jewelry. She saw someone — her boyfriend — caring enough to ask a designer to make something only for her. She saw the hours it took. She saw the hands that made it. She saw, in that small stack of photographs, that she had been thought about, slowly and carefully, by two people for two days.
